Development of a HACCP-based program for a private shellfish purification facility ArchiMer
Howell, T; Jones, S; Nardi, G.
A HACCP-based program is developed for the Spinney Creek Oyster Company (SCOC) Shellfish Purification Facility under a pilot program funded and implemented by the New England Fisheries Development Association (NEFDA). The SCOC Facility, which includes a government approved in-house coliform laboratory, is fully licensed for oysters and clams under State of Maine and NSSP regulations. SCOC's business is producing value-added, quality-assured shellfish for premium, health conscious markets. To accomplish this, SCOC uses shellfish harvested from approved waters which is an important distinction from other purification plants which process shellfish originating from restricted waters. It was necessary to create a flow chart of the various steps involved in the...

Distribución del mercurio total en los tejidos de un delfín nariz de botella (Tursiops gephyreus Lahille, 1908) de la provincia de Buenos Aires (Argentina) OceanDocs
Malaspina, A.M.; Pérez, A.; Moreno, V.J.; Bastida, R.O.; Aizpun, J.E..
Samples of seventeen different tissues of one specimen of the bottlenose dolphin Tursiops gephyreus, caught accidentally in waters adjacent to Mar del Plata by local fishermen (38°00'S; 57°20'W), were analyzed for total mercury distribution. The analytical procedure employed for total mercury involved a wet acid digestion followed by flameless atomic absorption. The method was based essentially on the one proposed by Armstrong and Uthe (1971).

Effectiveness of a Cuban marine protected area in meeting multiple management objectives OceanDocs
Angulo-Valdés, J. A..
In this work the management effectiveness of a Cuban MPA is assessed using an interdisciplinary approach. A series of three hypotheses are tested to determine how effective the Punta Frances Marine Protected Area (PFMPA) has been in meeting the multiple objectives of conserving biological diversity and ecological integrity, while allowing for the development of economic opportunities for tourism, and satisfying the needs of local and distant human populations. A new typology of benefits derived from MPAs was produced to provide managers with a practical tool that enable them to: 1) identify the benefits at the early stages of MPA creation, 2) state MPA objectives in a clear and measurable way, 3) assess the effectiveness of their MPA in meeting...

Epidemiological investigation on envenomation: from theory to practice J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Chippaux,JP.
A better understanding of the epidemiology of envenoming would improve care, provided that the survey is representative, reliable and accurate. Several types of surveys could help to clarify the incidence, severity, circumstances, factors and determinants of envenomations. The relevant information may be collected and analyzed from hospital records or case report forms (for retrospective studies) or established from a protocol of longitudinal observation of cases attended at health facilities during a given period (prospective study). The household survey includes interviewing all or part of the population of a locality with a standardized questionnaire to obtain information on the circumstances of the accident. Finally, standardized questionnaires can be...

Essais de decontamination des huitres Crassostrea gigas en bassin par renouvellement et circulation de l''eau ArchiMer
Faury, Nicole; Masson, Daniel; Ratiskol, Jacqueline.
The germs decreasing of artificially contaminated oysters Crassostrea gigas has been studied in experimental tanks similar to a shellfish depuration plant, without any chemical or physical water treatment. The oyster were treated by three different water management pattern, compared to a control tank and the germs decreasing studied by MPN method of fecal Coliforms and Streptococus. As a result: 1) it appaears somewhat difficult to conclude in this first attempt about the most efficient treatment. 2) the most important factor in shellfish depuration working is obviously the physiological activity (and stage) of the animals.

Ex-ante Policy Assessment of Agricultural, Environmental, and Rural Policies from an Institutional Perspective: The Procedure for Institutional Compatibility Assessment AgEcon
Theesfeld, Insa; Schleyer, Christian; Callois, Jean-Marc; Aznar, Olivier.
Ex-ante impact assessment of agricultural, environmental, and rural policies has become an integral part of political decision making processes in the EU. While there is a large variety of agrienvironmental modelling tools available to analyse likely social, economic, and environmental impacts of these policies, scientifically well-founded ex-ante policy assessment tools capturing the institutional dimension are still missing. In this paper, we introduce a formalised procedure for modelling – ex-ante – institutional aspects for policy implementation: the ‘Procedure for Institutional Compatibility Assessment’ (PICA). PICA has been designed as an explorative, yet formalised methodology that enables policy makers to identify at an early stage potential...

FARM CERTIFICATION AND THE IMPLEMENTATION OF HACCP IN AGRICULTURE: A COST/BENEFIT ANALYSIS AgEcon
Galan, Mari-Neatrice; Aubry, Christine; Maze, Armelle.
This article aims to highlight the methodological bases and principles, sometimes implicit, that have served as support for the development of a referential similar to the one retained as part of the French decree on "Agriculture Raisonnée", namely the Quali'Terre referential. We show that the innovations introduced by this referential are of various natures: i) a change of perspective by taking a position at the level of the farming system and not of a given parcel of land or production, ii) use of the HACCP method for identification and most especially the prioritization of risks and the preventive measures to be implemented, iii) the introduction of the concept of continual improvement for the farmer. Even, if from an agronomic point of view, the...

Fecal collection methods for the determination of protein digestibility in bullfrogs Ciência Rural
Stéfani,Marta Verardino De; Pereira,Marcelo Maia; Reche,Marcio Roberto; Mansano,Cleber Fernando Menegasso.
Adequate methods for the determination of protein digestibility in bullfrogs are important for the understanding of nutrient utilization. Therefore, this study evaluated two methods of feces collection: intestinal dissection and fecal decantation, using cylindric-conical tanks. Frogs were fed with a commercial diet (45% crude protein) which was ground and supplemented with 0.5% chromium oxide III. The frogs were fasted 48h before force-feeding (5% of the animal's live weight). For the decantation method, the animals were sacrificed 36 h after force-feeding and feces were collected directly from the large intestine. For the sedimentation method, feces were collected when they appeared in the tubes attached to the front end of the cylindric tanks. No...

Foghorns to the Future: Using Knowledge and Transdisciplinarity to Navigate Complex Systems Ecology and Society
Cundill, Georgina N. R.; Rhodes University; gcundill@rides.cl; Fabricius, Christo; Rhodes University; c.fabricius@ru.ac.za; Marti, Neus; Autonomous University; neus@amauta.rcp.net.pe.
Complex systems are shaped by cross-scale interactions, nonlinear feedbacks, and uncertainty, among other factors. Transdisciplinary approaches that combine participatory and conventional methods and democratize knowledge to enable diverse inputs, including those from local, informal experts, are essential tools in understanding such systems. The metaphor of a “bridge” to overcome the divide between different disciplines and knowledge systems is often used to advocate for more inclusive approaches. However, there is a shortage of information and consensus on the process, methodologies, and techniques that are appropriate to achieve this. This paper compares two case studies from Peru and South Africa in which community-level assessments...

GHG Trading Framework for the U.S. Biofuels Sector AgEcon
Kumarappan, Subbu; Joshi, Satish V..
Substitution of petroleum fuels with biofuels such as ethanol and biodiesel has been shown to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. These GHG reductions can be traded in the emerging carbon markets, and methodologies for quantifying and trading are still being developed. The main challenges in developing such GHG trading framework are analyzed. An outline of such a framework is presented that depends on the life cycle assessment of GHG reductions, along with a combination of project specific and regional standard performance measures. The advantages of assigning GHG property and trading rights to biofuel producers are discussed. At carbon prices of $10 per metric ton, estimated additional revenues to biofuel producers range from $ 17 to 64 million dollars...

The need to track climate change adaptation progress is being increasingly recognized but our ability to do the tracking is constrained by the complex nature of adaptation and the absence of measurable outcomes or indicators by which to judge if and how adaptation is occurring. We developed a typology of approaches by which climate change adaptation can be tracked globally at a national level. On the one hand, outcome-based approaches directly measure adaptation progress and effectiveness with reference to avoided climate change impacts. However, given that full exposure to climate change impacts will not happen for decades, alternative approaches focus on developing indicators or proxies by which adaptation can be monitored. These include systematic...

Identificación y morfometría de las mandibulas de Loligo gahi y Loligo sanpaulensis (Cephalopoda, Loliginidae) del Atlántico Sudoccidental OceanDocs
Pineda, S.E.; Aubone, A.; Brunetti, N.E..
Beaks of Loliginid squids have very similar morphological features making identification of the species to be quite difficult. A new metodology to identify species from the relative growth of some parts of the beak is presented. Samples of Loligo gahi and Loligo sanpaulensiswere obtained from ten reserch cruises of RVS "Dr. Holmberg" and "Captain Oca Balda" and eight commercial landings at Mar del Plata Port during the period 1992-1993. The results obtained using the new metodology (Metric Discriminant Criterium)were compared with those resulting from the application of the Fisher's Lineal Discriminant Criterium. Both mantle length - rostral length and total weight - rostral length relationships, corresponding to each species were fitted. Either upper or...

Influence of Phenology and Post-Harvest Processing of Vegetal Material on the Allelopathy of Annoni Grass (Eragrostis plana) Extracts Planta Daninha
SCHEFFER-BASSO,S.M.; FIORENTIN,F. Jr. R.; FAVARETTO,A..
ABSTRACT: The phenological stage, post-harvest processing and quantity of material can interfere in the allelopathic activity of extracts. The objective of this study is to test the allelopathic effect of aqueous extracts of the leaves of Annoni grass (Eragrostis plana), an invader of natural pastures. Twelve extracts were prepared by combining the phenological stage of the plants when harvesting the leaves (vegetative; flowering), post-harvest processing before extraction (fresh; dry at 40 oC), and the amount of plant material (5, 15, and 25 g 100 mL-1 distilled water). Two bioassays were conducted in a germination chamber, with evaluation of germination and growth of seedlings of lettuce (Lactuca sativa) and white clover (Trifolium repens). The extracts...

Instructions to the Marine Meteorological Observers, 7th Edition. OceanDocs
The ocean meteorological program of the Weather Bureau has two separate and distinct parts. First, there is the daily service by radio. Owing to the need for brevity, the radio reports contain a limited amount of essential information. The daily weather reports from ships and islands reveal the conditions over the ocean; when assembled on a map, including continental reports, they give a picture of weather conditions existing momentarily over a large region. A collection of observations is immediately returned to the mariner by radio broadcast so that he may draw his own weather map on shipboard. By this process, the weather at the earth's surface is mapped and much can be inferred as to conditions above the surface. Formation and movement of storms are...
